Superman writer’s beliefs offend gay activists

Will a special prosecutor ultimately be needed to get to the bottom of the IRS scandal?

A writer for DC Comics‘ Superman series has come under attack from gay-rights activists, who view his work as anti-gay and want him fired.

Orson Scott Card is one of a team of writers and artists to create the new digital DC Comics product, “Adventures of Superman,” according to a report from Fox News. Mr. Card is a Mormon and vocal opponent of gay marriage. Fox News reported he once referred to same-sex marriage as the end of democracy in America and suggested “the left is at war with the family.”

Mr. Card also wrote: “Same-sex attraction is not a straitjacket; people’s desires change over time; gay people still have choices; a reproductive dysfunction like same-sex marriage is not a death sentence for your DNA or for your desire to have a family in which children grow up with male and female parents to model appropriate gender roles,” Fox News reported.

Thousands of gay-rights activists are now calling for his ouster at DC Comics. If he’s not fired, the activists say they will boycott the comic maker, Fox News reports.

Their petition, at Allout.org, states: “[Mr. Card‘s] written publicly that he believes marriage equality would lead to the end of civilization. We need to let DC Comic know they can’t support Orson Scott Card or his work to keep LGBT people as second-class citizens. They know they’re accountable to their fans, so if enough of us speak out now, they’ll hear us loud and clear.”

Fox News reports that DC Comics is so far standing by Mr. Card’s “personal views.”
