The arrests come amid a spree of violence in the area that left three others dead, including another Suitland High School student and an 18-year-old who until recently attended Forestville Military Academy.
Police do not believe the slayings are related or that Charles knew his attackers.
The five men arrested in Charles‘ killing are all charged with first-degree murder. Police identified them as Derryck Antonio Green, 20, of the 900 block of North Henry Street in Alexandria; Jermani Maurice Whitner, 18, of the 2900 block of St. Clair Drive in Temple Hills; Glenn Cornell Leach, 23, of the 1000 block of Southern Avenue in Southeast D.C.; Tayvon Delonte Williams, 21, of the 6400 block of Livingston Road in Oxon Hill; and Kevin J. Smith, 21, of the 2900 block of St. Clair Drive in Temple Hills.
School officials said none of the five men is a student in county public schools.
“We hope today’s news can provide some comfort for the family of Charles Walker,” county Police Chief Mark A. Magaw said at a news conference Wednesday, adding that leads in the case came from tips from the community.
Police confirmed that the five men were in a vehicle and drove up to Charles as he was walking in the 4100 block of 28th Avenue in Hillcrest Heights. It is believed the men targeted Charles to rob him of the shoes he was carrying Monday afternoon. Police found the teen and the shoes at the scene, located a block from his home.
“All five were at the scene, all five were in the vehicle and all five participated in the murder of Charles Walker,” said Maj. Michael Straughan, commander of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
While police said all five men have admitted their involvement in the attempted robbery and shooting, they have not determined who pulled the trigger.
As police provided updates on the arrests, it was also announced that the second victim in Tuesday’s shooting outside a Forestville apartment complex also had died.
That shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3700 block of Donnell Drive. Police earlier identified the first victim as another Suitland High School student, freshman Aaron Kidd, 18. The second victim was identified as 18-year-old Andre Walter Shuford, who until October had attended Forestville Military Academy, a public magnet school. School officials said Mr. Shuford withdrew from the school system sometime in October. No arrests have been made in their killings.
Also killed Tuesday night in Prince George’s County was Eric Eugene Walker, 27, of the 4200 block of Sheldon Avenue in Baltimore. Police have charged Duane Lamar Williams, 34, of Southeast D.C., with first-degree murder in the case. Police think Mr. Williams was high on PCP when he began shooting at Eric Walker at a Hillcrest Heights gas station in the 2900 block of Colebrook Drive.
