Drew Peterson was sentenced Thursday to 38 years in prison for murdering his third wife, USA Today reports.
The former Illinois police officer was convicted of murder in September for the drowning death of Kathleen Savio in March 2004.
He stunned the court Thursday afternoon in the Joliet, Ill., courtoom, shouting, “I did not kill Kathleen!”
“Yes, you did!” said one of Mrs. Savio’s relatives, who was escorted out of the courtroom.
Mr. Peterson will be required to serve the entirety of his sentence. If he lives long enough, he will be 97 years old by the time his sentence is completed.
