Starting early: Chicago proposes sex ed for kindergartners

Chicago students begin sex education in the fifth grade, as do most of the nation’s children, but the Chicago public school board has proposed teaching kids about sex beginning at age 5.

Parents can opt their children out of the program. CPS says that the education program will instruct kids about sex in an age-appropriate manner, like kindergartners will learn about their anatomy and appropriate and inappropriate touching, ABC 22 reports.

Fourth graders will focus on puberty and HIV/AIDs, and fifth graders will have teachers lead discussions about human reproduction, contraception and abstinence, according to ABC 22.

The program also will include discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity for the first time, WGNTV reports.
