Michelle Obama to attend Hadiya Pendleton funeral in Chicago

First lady Michelle Obama will travel to Chicago on Saturday to attend the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old majorette who performed at the president’s second inaugural parade last month.

A White House official confirmed the trip and said that senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, the former head of Chicago schools, will join Mrs. Obama, Politico reports.

The devolopment comes after White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Jan. 30 that the president had no plans to attend the majorette’s funeral.

Miss Pendleton was shot in the back by an unknown gunman on Jan. 29, while she stood with a group of teens seeking shelter from the rain just blocks away from her school.

The reward to find the young honor student’s killer was reached to $40,000, WGN-TV reports.
