Snow shuts major Calif. highway for hours

- Associated Press - Friday, January 11, 2013

SAN DIEGO — The California Highway Patrol is planning to reopen a 40-mile stretch of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles that has been closed for many hours due to snow.

A dispatcher says officers plan to open a southbound lane of the main north-south route Friday morning. Blowing snow forced a shutdown of the key highway at 4 p.m. Thursday, prompting hundreds of truckers to pull over and spend the night in their cabs.

California is in the grip of a cold snap that's expected to last through the weekend.

Morning temperatures have fallen into the 20s and 30s in many areas, and much lower in the mountains.
