At least 3 people shot at Texas college campus

A second man has been taken into custody after two people were wounded in crossfire between two students at Lone Star Community College in North Harris County, Texas. A fourth man is reported to have suffered a heart attack.

One suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward. Police had been searching a wooded area just north of the campus for the second suspect, who reportedly turned himself in to the police.

The campus has since been evacuated. School district officials told WHAS 11 that four nearby campuses were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Lone Star posted an alert on its website at 12:47 p.m. local time asking students and faculty to “take immediate shelter where you are.”

Student Amanda Vasquez said she took cover under a desk when she heard the gunshots. She said she heard a lot of shouting and a woman put a chair against the door barricading herself and the other students inside. Miss Vasquez called her mom and told her to call the police.

“She didn’t believe me,” she told The Daily Mail. “Because you never think this kind of thing will happen to you.”

Miss Vasquez said she heard about six shots. Fellow student Joshua Flores told The New York Times one of the bystanders shot is a janitor.

“A janitor got shot on the side of his leg,” he said. “He was wearing his uniform.”

Another witness said she heard one of the gunmen say, “I don’t want any trouble. I don’t want to go to jail.”

Josh Havens, a spokesman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, said the governor’s office was monitoring the situation, CNN reports.

“[Mr. Perry’s] thoughts and prayers are with those who have been impacted,” Mr. Havens said.
