At least two animals have fallen ill from meatballs laced with rat poison after a disgruntled dog-hater scattered the tainted meat throughout the streets of San Francisco.
A seven-year-old dachshund called Oskar remains in critical but stable condition, The Daily Mail reported.
Police are warning residents about the "truly unusual" crime after the meatballs were discovered in Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights, Lower Haight, Cole Valley, Hayes Valley and Bernal Heights neighborhoods, The Mail said.
"We've heard (through social media) that there have been some pets that have supposedly died, but we can't confirm any deaths," Park Police station Inspector Joseph Nannery said.
He added that the prankster's bizarre motives could be due to his hatred of barking dogs or if he's tired of pets pooping in the area.
