18 killed in Indonesia after riot over boxer’s loss

- The Washington Times - Monday, July 15, 2013

At least 18 were killed in a stampede in Indonesia after 1,500 rioted over a boxing match that pitted two from rival tribes against each other.

The riot took place at the Kota Lama Sport Stadium in Papua province at a fight between Alvius Rumkorem and Yulianus Pigome, fighters from rival tribes, The Independent reported.

Rumkorem was given the win, based on points — and the stadium erupted in riot. Supporters of Pigome started hurling chairs at judges, and supporters of Rumkorem retaliated by throwing bottles.

Most of those killed were women, The Independent said.

The stadium only had two working exits at the time of the riot, and many of those who were killed were crushed to death at the doors.

Lt. Col. Gede Sumerta Jaya, a police spokesman, said in The Independent that at least 40 were injured.
