At least 28 who attended a Thursday evening fireworks show in Los Angeles were injured during an accidental detonation in a large community park, police said.
The incident occurred about 9:20 p.m., police Cmdr. John Parks said, CBS reported. The fireworks show, Fireworks Extravaganza, takes place at the Simi Valley area every year and usually brings in thousands of people.
The fireworks mishap sent 28 to the hospital with injuries, and another eight or so seeking medical treatment at the park, CBS reported.
It's not clear why the fireworks suddenly exploded, but a video clip of the event captures a couple small blasts near the ground, by the staging area, as the fireworks continue for a full minute.
One witness said to KCBS: "One guy got hit in the head. He was bleeding. His girlfriend was bleeding form the leg." And another one told the Los Angeles Times: "Everybody was just terrified. People hid in bushes."
