Police on Thursday identified a 7-year-old girl killed in a two-vehicle crash in Temple Hills but were still searching for the driver of the other vehicle, who fled the scene of the crash on foot.
Azarya Johnson, of the 2900 block of Brinkley Road in Temple Hills, died from injuries sustained when the minivan she was riding in collided with an SUV. The crash occurred around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Saint Barnabas and Temple Hills roads.
A Prince George's County police spokesman could not confirm whether Azarya was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Another child riding in the minivan, as well as the driver, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police declined Thursday to release any details of the circumstances of the crash, including the cause, saying much remains under investigation. They also have not identified the woman who was driving the SUV involved in the crash but ran away from the scene before officers arrived.
The driver of the SUV involved in the crash has not been identified, but police described her as a short Hispanic woman who goes by the name "Rosa" and was last seen wearing a blue shirt. Officials said she ran from the scene of the crash before officers arrived.
A man riding in the SUV remained on the scene.
