Chile police storm schools taken over by hundreds of students

- The Washington Times - Thursday, June 27, 2013

Police in Chile brought an end to a two-week student takeover of nearly two dozen schools, storming and evicting hundreds of students on Thursday.

The students had been demanding reforms in the educational system, The Associated Press reported.

Law enforcement donned riot gear and clashed with students, arresting at least 122, AP said. An officer was injured; his condition wasn't immediately clear.

Twenty-eight schools were involved, AP reported. The schools are supposed to be voting sites in Sunday's elections. The students — who've occupied the facilities for roughly two weeks — were warned to clear out, or face ouster.

President Sebastian Pinera told them earlier in the week that police were going to forcibly remove them soon.
