An inmate at the D.C. jail was found dead from an apparent suicide, corrections officials said.

Walter Calloway, 42, of Southeast, was found hanging in his cell Saturday night, just a day after he was committed there on a felony charge of first-degree child sexual abuse, officials said.

Corrections officers and medical personnel attempted to resuscitate Mr. Calloway, but he died on scene.

The apparent suicide comes two weeks after another death of an inmate in the District.

Paul Mannina, a Department of Labor attorney, was found with his throat cut on June 18 in the D.C. jail.

Mannina had just had his preliminary hearing in court the day before.

A spokeswoman said his case is a “death investigation” and had not been officially ruled a suicide.
