New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly gay, has officially thrown her hat in the ring to become the next mayor.

She announced Sunday via Twitter: “It’s official. I’m running for mayor to fight for the middle class.”

Ms. Quinn, 46, is seen as a frontrunner in the Democratic Party, Reuters reports. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is wrapping up his 12 years as head at City Hall, is supporting her. If elected, she would become the city’s first female — and first openly gay — mayor.

Her platforms include safe streets, better schools, affordable housing and day care, and better-paying jobs, Reuters says.

She has been a City Council representative since 1999 and was elected to the speaker role in 2006.
