A New York woman holding her baby plunged to her death from an eight-story West Harlem building Wednesday in an apparent suicide, officials reported. Her 10-month-old baby miraculously survived.
Cynthia Wachenheim, 45, was found on the street with her son, Keston, near her arms, Fox News reports. The baby is in stable condition.
Police say they found a 7-page suicide letter in the woman’s apartment she shares with her husband. The note said that Mrs. Wachenheim knew what she was about to do was “evil” but that she saw no other way out, seeing the way her baby was developing, Fox News reports.
It is unknown whether the child has any disabilities.
An area resident witnessed the suicide from the street, saying the mother landed on her back, absorbing most of the impact. The baby bounced off of her and landed face down.
“I heard a scream like a yell,” Steven Dominguez, 18, told My Fox New York. “When I got closer, I saw the baby crying. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it.”
Mrs. Wachenheim attended law school at Columbia, and her father was a New York police spokesman before his death in 2011, My Fox New York reports.
