In what one eyewitness described as a "James Bond moment," two Canadian inmates escaped during a daylight jailbreak when a hijacked helicopter dangled ropes above prison grounds and they rushed to cable themselves to the lines.

The helicopter was hijacked Sunday from a tour company by two other men who held the pilot at gunpoint and ordered him to fly above the prison near Montreal, according to several reports.

"The helicopter then took off with these two men suspended underneath and it flew away, much to the surprise and astonishment of everyone in the area," a CTV News reporter said.

The inmates' freedom was short-lived — both they and the two hijackers were captured later in the day.

One of the escaped prisoners had been convicted of attempted murder, the other of arson and other crimes, CNN reported.
