Pentagon officially begins strategy reassessment

The Pentagon officially announced Monday that it has begun reassessing its defense strategy in light of budget constraints.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered top officials to review the defense strategy to “examine whether assumptions made in that strategy are still applicable,” according to a statement by Pentagon press secretary George Little.

The reassessment, first reported Friday by The Washington Times, comes as the Pentagon is forced to cut its budget by $46 billion by Sept. 30 and $500 billion over the next decade under an automatic spending reduction plan called sequestration.

Officials will examine not only the strategy but also the military’s “force posture, investments, and institutional management,” Mr. Little said in the statement.

Mr. Hagel has directed the review to be finished by May 31.
