LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Blame it on sequestration

The Obama administration’s release of several hundred illegal immigrants from detention — a move it has attributed to sequestration “cuts” — would be laughable were it not so serious (“Illegal immigrants set free from detention centers as sequester approaches,” Web, Wednesday).

This White House has never taken border security seriously. As Michelle Malkin has pointed out on numerous occasions, the federal agency responsible for immigration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has a dirty little secret: It has followed a “catch and release” policy on illegals for years. This policy started long before Barack Obama became president.

What’s more, attempts by state and local governments to impose order on uncontrolled immigration in the face of almost complete federal-enforcement abdication by Mr. Obama have been met with federal lawsuits. This has drained millions of dollars of scarce federal resources. It’s just one more example of the president’s penchant for theatrics over substance, and his unwillingness to address a debt crisis that will soon overwhelm the nation.
