Swiss hockey player becomes ‘permanent paraplegic’ after being checked from behind
Swiss hockey defenseman Ronny Keller has been left paralyzed by a hit during a game earlier this week that drove him head first into the boards, doctors say.
A tweet from the hospital stated: “Following a serious injury of the fourth thoracic vertebra, Ronny Keller will be a permanent paraplegic.”
The player who hit him, Stefan Schnyder, is being questioned by police, AP reports. Meanwhile, the hockey league is looking into the incident, which many have characterized as a cheap shot. Deadspin reports Mr. Keller, 33, was checked from behind.
Deadspin also reports that a Swiss attorney is investigating whether charges may be filed against Mr. Schnyder. The attorney is reportedly weighing the intent of the hit and whether negligence of sport rules played any part in the incident.
