Gay sports hall of fame taking nominations

- The Washington Times - Wednesday, May 1, 2013

The nonprofit National Gay & Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame has opened the door to nominations and beginning this summer will take names of those who have "stood up to stereotypes" and supported gay athletes.

"We're not just going to honor gay athletes, but other athletes who helped those gay athletes along and provided a safe haven," said Bill Gubrud, executive director and board chairman of the nonprofit, in the Chicago Tribune.

NBA player Jason Collins is among the likely nominees, Mr. Gubrud said.

The deceased are not off-limits, Mr. Gubrund said, in the report.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 2 at the center on Halsted, one day before the Out at Wrigley event, also sponsored by Mr. Gubrud's group, the Chicago Tribune reported. That's a day set aside to recognize gays.
