One person was killed and another seriously injured in a parking garage collapse at the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda on Thursday afternoon.
Both individuals are construction workers who were trapped when a 50,000-pound section of the concrete parking garage fell and trapped them, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
Emergency workers responded to the call for the collapsed structure around 1:45 p.m. and extricated the survivor late Thursday afternoon. The man was taken to a hospital in serious condition, officials said.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear.
The three-story parking garage was undergoing renovations and closed to the public at the time of the collapse.
