MSNBC host Chris Hayes surprisingly came to Rep. Michele Bachmann’s defense on Wednesday after many of his liberal counterparts cheered the news that she would not be seeking reelection next year.

“People call Michele Bachmann crazy a lot, people on our side, broadly, and it always drives me crazy a little bit because I just feel like that word has this kind of dismissive venom to it that doesn’t grapple seriously with someone who just has a set of beliefs,” he said on “All In,” while showing numerous headlines calling the Minnesota Republican crazy.

The Salon’s Joan Walsh and syndicated columnist Dan Savage vehemently disagreed with Hayes‘ statement.

“Well when someone who goes on TV and says that the HPV virus causes mental retardation … the woman has said a lot of blatantly crazy [things],” Hayes said. “Occasionally you have to call a nut a nut … she’s not a bit of a nut, she’s a lot of a nut.”

Ms. Walsh interjected, saying “Obamacare will literally kill women and children,” apparently quoting the congresswoman.

Hayes also pointed out how the left in a sense mourned the news of Bachmann’s departure because of how much traffic her statements bring liberal websites.
