The son of a former Pakistani prime minister — who is himself now running for political office — was kidnapped by gunmen on Thursday during a dramatic snatch that played on the streets outside the central city of Multan.
Ali Haider Gilani, the son of Yousuf Raza Gilani, is running for a seat in the secular Pakistan People's Party in the Punjab province. His kidnapping was dramatic; his family is one of the most powerful in the region, The Associated Press reported.
"People came on a motorbike. They also had a car with them, and they opened fire and abducted Yousuf Raza Gilani's son Ali Haider in a black Honda," said police officer Khurram Shakur, in the AP report.
Another police officer, Ghulam Mohammad Dogar, said the abduction was "definitely an act of terrorists," AP reported.
The incident took place on the last day of official campaigning for Saturday's election, AP said.
