A suspect is in custody after shots were fired in the neonatal unit of a children’s hospital outside Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, a wanted 22-year-old, was found around noon on the seventh floor of the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin holding a baby, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

When police told the man he was under arrest, he reportedly put down the baby and fled.

The man had a gun and turned toward officers in a threatening manner, but he did not fire, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. told the paper. That’s when officers fired several times.

The man was being treated for injuries to his wrist, Sheriff Clarke said. The baby was unharmed.

“This is not a situation where a guy came in to shoot somebody,” he said.

The hospital remained on lockdown for several hours.

“The situation at Children’s has been contained. The hospital building remains locked down until law enforcement issues a complete all-clear,” the hospital tweeted at 1:30 p.m. CST.
