An accused child molester in Massachusetts is willing to undergo "physical castration" in exchange for a reduced sentence, his lawyer said.
John Burbine, 49, of Wakefield, is charged with molesting several children at his wife's unlicensed day care center between August 2010 and August 2012, the Associated Press reported.
Prosecutors say he sexually abused children ranging from 8 days to 3½ years old.
William Barabino, who represents Mr. Burbine, said Wednesday he was seeking a plea agreement that would limit his client's sentence to 15 years if he agreed to undergo the procedure, The Boston Herald reported. Prosecutors, however, are seeking life and are not open to a plea, the lawyer said.
A judge declined Wednesday to consider the proposal but left it open for future discussion, the AP said.
Mr. Barabino told The Herald that castration is effective in producing "a drastic reduction or complete discontinuation in sexual urges and sexual function, due to the inability to produce testosterone."
