Merry Christmas: California atheists launch godless billboard campaign

- The Washington Times - Tuesday, November 26, 2013

An atheist group that wants to make clear its dissatisfaction with the Christian bent of the Christmas season has just kicked off a 55-billboard campaign aimed at spreading some unbelief.

The Greater Sacramento Chapter of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, which pushes for complete separation of religion from the government, blasted the billboard messages, as reported in The Blaze: "I worship nothing and question everything" and "Studying the Bible made me an atheist" and "Reason. Equality. Doing Good — all without gods."

The atheist group said its only trying to reach out to those who feel out of place at Christmastime and during Hanukkah season.

The "Our of the Closet" campaign is "because atheists are starting to speak up and they're beginning to identify each other and find out they're not alone," said Judy Saint, the president of the group's Sacramento chapter, in an interview with the local KXTV station. Many "don't know that atheism is okay. There are a lot of non-believers and this time of year, they feel like they're all alone."

She also said it wasn't the group's intent to slam believers.

The billboard messages will hang around a month, The Blaze said.
