An assistant football coach at Missouri Southern State University has died after he was shot in a movie theater parking lot, the school’s athletic department announced Saturday.

Coach Derek Moore was shot at 9:50 p.m. CDT Friday in the parking lot of the Northstar 14 Theatres in Joplin, Mo., The Joplin Globe reported. He died on Saturday, according to Bleacher Report.

It was the 37-year-old coach’s first year at MSSU, but he had accumulated 14 previous seasons of collegiate coaching experience, the report said.

He is survived by a 7-year-old son.

Jeffery L. Bruner, 39, was arrested and charged with Class A felony murder and armed criminal action. Bond was denied, The Globe reported.

A memorial service and candlelight vigil will be held for Moore at 4:30 p.m. CST Monday at Corley Auditorium on the school’s campus.

Homecoming activities and the school’s home game against Lindenwood University have been postponed, The Globe reported.
