I am a law-abiding citizen. I have lived in Maryland for 30-plus years and raised five similarly law-abiding children, some of whom are in the process of raising their own children. We all love our country. We all love to hunt, fish, hike, camp, bird-watch, etc. We pay lots of money to support wildlife through the user fees attached to fishing and hunting licenses. Combined, we spend many thousands of dollars annually on our recreational activities.

I am also an information-security professional. I have certifications in it, and my career has been in designing, installing and maintaining information-technology systems that keep people and data safe.

What Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley did with registered gun owners’ personal-identity information would land any other person in jail (“National gun registry gets head start as Maryland compromises gun owners’ privacy,” Commentary, Sept. 12). This is no different from what National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden did, and numerous resources are being used to bring Mr. Snowden to justice.

Mr. O’Malley and the state of Maryland ought to be held accountable for this breach of security.
