Pilot from History Channel’s ‘Ax Men’ dies in freak helicopter accident

- The Washington Times - Thursday, September 19, 2013

The logging pilot from History Channel's "Ax Men" died in an Oregon forest Tuesday in a freak helicopter accident, and police are trying to figure out what exactly went wrong.

William Bart Colantuono, 54, who flew a helicopter for R&R Logging, died on the scene, a local Fox affiliate reported. He was flying alone.

Witnesses said they saw a rotor separate from the helicopter, followed by the aircraft turning upside down and falling to the ground.

Linn County deputies said Mr. Colantuono released the logs he was carrying before crashing, indicating he knew of a problem before the accident, KPTV reported.

A History Channel representative said the network is "extremely saddened to learn that a member of the 'Ax Men' family, Bart Colantuono, passed away yesterday."

"All of us at HISTORY and Original Productions, along with our Ax Men team, would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Bart. He was an important part of Ax Men when he appeared in season three and his talents will be greatly missed," the statement said, according to the station.
