Six people, including four children, were seriously injured after the car they were riding in struck a tree, Price George’s County police said Sunday.

The crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, said Officer Nicole Hubbard, when a car heading northbound on Church Road near Mount Oak Road swerved into oncoming traffic.

Officer Hubbard said the car missed hitting any other vehicles, but struck a tree. She could not say what caused the car to swerve into traffic.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady said via Twitter that some passengers were trapped in the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The ix passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Officer Hubbard said. Mr. Brady said helicopters could not be used to transport the victims because of weather conditions.
