I was pleased to read the news about the idea of a new free-trade zone in Shanghai ("U.S. companies await opening of Shanghai's free-trade zone," Web, Sept. 17). This is an amazing initiative that should serve as an example for the whole world.
All the barriers to international trade are ridiculous; they are only good for governments. Imagine if the whole world could trade freely. Some people might say this would ruin the domestic industries of some countries, but I totally disagree. The positive results of an action like this one go beyond the economic sphere.
The saying "If goods don't cross borders, armies will" aptly explains exactly what is happening around the world nowadays and shows how international trade can be helpful in order to increase world peace. If a country has good trade relations with another country, they will think twice before starting a war with that country.
