A man-eating crocodile weighing more than a ton was caught in Kakira, Uganda, to the relief of area villagers who said they've been terrorized for months.

The giant reptile — which at 2,204 pounds is only 103 pounds shy of the world record — is blamed for eating four people in the Lake Victoria region.

Sulani Tumanya, an official with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, told a local newspaper that the crocodile is about 80 years old.

The wildlife agency spent four days hunting the beast after residents called for help.

"Residents appealed to UWA to hunt the crocodile following the death of a resident from Kakira town council in Jinja district," Mr. Tumanya told the newspaper.
