RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A man driving an N.C. Department of Transportation excavator truck is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after colliding with a van driven by an off-duty Tarboro police officer,

The N.C. Highway Patrol said Thursday that 29-year-old William Allen Harrell II of Macclesfield is charged with driving left of center and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.

Harrell was placed under a $2,500 unsecured bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.

Tarboro Police Chief Damon Williams said 46-year-old Charles Johnson was a 24-year veteran of the force. He was killed when the NCDOT truck crossed the center line on N.C. 111 Wednesday and into the path of Johnson’s van.

Williams said a fund is being established at a local bank for Johnson’s widow and two children.
