The 2012 Olympic 5,000-meter silver medalist from Ethiopia edged Maine’s Ben True in a photo finish, setting a race record of 13 minutes, 26 seconds.
Rhode Island’s Molly Huddle came from behind to win the women’s race in 15:12.
More than 8,600 entrants finished the 3.1 miles through Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood as celebrations of running returned to the city a year after the bombings at last year’s marathon.
Huddle was sixth with less than a mile to go. She said that “I thought it would be great for an American to win this race and so I think it gave me a little extra boost.”
Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia was second in 15:14.
