VENICE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a small plane crashed in a Michigan farm field, killing the pilot and his passenger.

The Argus-Press of Owosso reports (http://bit.ly/1piY70z ) the plane crashed Saturday afternoon in Shiawassee County’s Venice Township. Police have not identified the men who died.

Francis Osika says he was standing next to his barn when he saw the plane “spitting and sputtering.” Osika says it made a sharp left turn, crossed over a road and banked left again before crashing into the field with its landing gear down.

Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian BeGole said the plane was an experimental aircraft owned by an aviation company he declined to name. Authorities have contacted the Federal Aviation Administration, which will lead the investigation.
