HOPKINTON, Mass. (AP) - Runners and spectators started arriving at the Boston Marathon starting line in Hopkinton as the sun came up amid tight security.

Police and military uniforms were everywhere - including on the roofs of some buildings - in Hopkinton center Monday as buses bearing the message “Boston Strong” disgorged runners.

But rather than creating a tense situation, everyone appeared relaxed. Some runners even thanked the police officers for making them feel safe.

A banner on one building read: “You are Boston Strong. You Earned This.”

Spectators went through tight security checkpoints before being allowed near the common.

Tens of thousands of competitors were expected at the starting line before the race gets underway in a series of waves starting with mobility-impaired contestants at 8:50 a.m.
