NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Collier County wants the state to revoke a permit for a Texas oil company recently fined for an unauthorized operation.

County commissioners voted to ask the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to revoke the permit allowing the Dan A. Hughes Co. to drill on an island surrounded by a sanctuary. Hughes has been allowed to drill there since 2012.

The $25,000 fine issued April 8 stems from a drilling operation using acid to create fractures. The DEP says Hughes’ permit allowed one acid treatment, but the company did another without approval.

The company says it complied with the law.

Separately, a state administrative judge is reviewing a challenge to another permit that would allow Hughes to drill an exploratory oil well near the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge.
