WELLSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in central Pennsylvania say a man shot and killed his elderly mother before turning the gun upon himself.

Officials in York County said the shotgun shootings happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. Thursday at a home in Warrington Township.

Coroner Pam Gay said 57-year-old Donald Cassel shot and killed 81-year-old Shirley Westheafer and then killed himself. Gay said both died of a single shot to the head.

The woman’s death was ruled a homicide and the man’s death a suicide. No autopsies will be performed.

Gay said Westheafer had moved in with her son and daughter-in-law because she could no longer live by herself due to health issues, including dementia.
