NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) - An Ipswich police officer has pleaded not guilty in an alleged assault on his girlfriend last fall.

The Essex district attorney’s office said 52-year-old Peter Nikas was arraigned Friday in Newburyport on charges including assault and battery and witness intimidation.

Prosecutors say Nikas got into a physical confrontation with his girlfriend Oct. 27, then took her and her children to a friend’s home. Prosecutors say he returned twice, intoxicated. The first time a fellow officer who lived at the house took him home. The second time he allegedly struggled with the fellow officer before being persuaded to leave.

A judge set $1,000 cash bail and ordered Nikas to wear a GPS monitor, avoid alcohol, surrender his firearms and stay away from the alleged victims.

Nikas, the brother of Ipswich Police Chief Paul Nikas, has been on paid leave.
