Man arrested in Wisconsin motorcyclists deaths

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) - Police have arrested an Illinois man in the hit-and-run deaths of two Wisconsin motorcyclists.

Authorities say the 24-year-old man from Park City, Ill., was arrested Thursday after Rock County sheriff’s authorities got a tip about the suspect vehicle.

The Beloit Daily News reports the tip described an Infiniti SUV with front-end damage.

Twenty-four-year-old Mitchell Vance and 18-year-old Devin Julius, both of Janesville, were killed in the crash on Highway 14 in the Town of Harmony on Sunday. The two were riding motorcycles when an SUV crossed the center line and hit them. Other motorcyclists were able to avoid the crash.

Sheriff Robert Spoden says the suspect is in jail in Illinois awaiting extradition.

Gruett jumps into 8th congressional district race

CHILTON, Wis. (AP) - A university professor says he’s running as a Democrat for Wisconsin’s 8th congressional district, a seat held by Republican Reid Ribble since 2011.

Ron Gruett said Friday he would be more attentive to the middle class than Ribble, who he says is a perfect fit for the top 1 percent of wage earners.

The 64-year-old Chilton professor teaches chemistry and physics at Marian University in Fond du Lac. Gruett says he’s become frustrated with Ribble’s vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act and other votes he says have hurt the middle class.

Gruett faces an uphill battle in fundraising. Ribble has nearly $1 million in the bank as of March 31st.

Police: Wisconsin hostage-taker sought shootout

WITTENBERG, Wis. (AP) - Police say a Wisconsin man facing charges for using a .38-caliber revolver to take hostages at a McDonald’s had just quit his job and was looking for a confrontation with officers.

Travis Keiler, 28, told an employee at the Shell gas station attached to the McDonald’s that he was waiting for police to arrive, Press-Gazette Media reported (http://gbpg.net/1jLrosehttp://gbpg.net/1jLrose ) Thursday.

“His comment was he wanted to have a confrontation with police. He wanted a confrontation with us,” Shawano County Sheriff Randall Wright said.

The employee, Roxanne Nitecki, remembered briefly confronting the 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pound Keiler early on in the standoff.

“He told me, ‘I’m here to take over your shift. Lock the door and leave,’” Nitecki said. “I wasn’t understanding; I said, ‘Are you the police?’ He said, ‘No, I’m waiting for them. I’ve had a bad day.’”

Nitecki said a co-worker acted quickly to make sure customers stayed outside and out of harm’s way by running to the gas pumps and yelling, “Get out of here! There’s a man with a gun!”

Authorities say Keiler then held a McDonald’s manager hostage at gunpoint for an hour. The criminal complaint also says Keiler told a negotiator during the two-hour standoff that he believed police were following him.
