GAGE, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico State Forestry official says a large wildfire that was first spotted Saturday afternoon near the town of Gage was about 50 percent contained by the evening.

Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says the wildfire covers 2,000 to 3,000 acres and threatens nearby buildings. He adds that it’s unknown how many buildings are threatened.

Ware says crews are working to contain the fire, which was spread by high winds. He says he expects the fire to stay about 50 percent contained overnight.

Gage is a small town of about 100 people west of the larger city of Deming.

Ware says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
