GARY, Ind. (AP) - Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson told a northwestern Indiana audience that education has been a key to his success.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star spoke Monday at a fundraising event in Gary benefiting a program that provides college scholarships and enrichment programs for the city’s youth.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report he told the crowd he grew up poor, but not with poor dreams, and that his parents made sure he did well in school before he played basketball.

The appearance by Johnson was included in the contract one of his companies was awarded last year to provide food services for the Gary Community Schools. The event raised $100,000 for A Gary Promise, along with $50,000 from Johnson and his company.
