DETROIT (AP) - A lawyer says a prominent Detroit pastor has been called to a federal grand jury to talk about what he knows about efforts to influence the selection of Detroit City Council leaders.

Michael Cafferty represents the Rev Horace Sheffield III and tells The Detroit News (http://bit.ly/1kuNKjP ) that his client isn’t target of any probe.

Sheffield has been told to appear before a grand jury on April 24. His daughter Mary Sheffield is a council member.

Federal authorities aren’t commenting.

Cafferty says Horace Sheffield heard rumors of illegal activities and warned his daughter to report anything suspicious. She tells the newspaper she wasn’t offered anything.

Brenda Jones was made council president in a 5-4 vote in January. She says she knows nothing about an investigation and doesn’t pay attention to “rumors.”
