BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Highway Patrol Maj. Michael Gerhart Jr. has been named the patrol’s top trooper.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says Gerhart will be promoted to colonel in July when he succeeds James Prochniak as the patrol’s superintendent.

Prochniak is retiring after 27 years with the Highway Patrol. He has held the top job since 2009.

Gerhart began his career with the Highway Patrol in 1992. As superintendent, he will supervise 168 troopers and manage a two-year budget of $61 million.
