Marine shoots, kills colleague at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina

- The Washington Times - Wednesday, April 9, 2014

A Marine who was standing post at the main gate of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina opened fire on a fellow Marine inside the guard building, killing him.

Camp Lejeune spokesman Nat Fahy said the shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and that emergency responders spent frantic minutes trying to revive the victim. The Marine was later pronounced dead at the nearby hospital, CBS reported.

The Marine who fired was taken into custody for questioning, Mr. Fahy said, The Associated Press reported. The alleged shooter is a male, but his name is being withheld for the time being. The victim's name isn't being released until family members are notified of his death, AP reported.

Mr. Fahy said the main gate remained open after the incident, though law enforcement officials did cordon off the area.

Capt. Joshua Smith, the deputy director of public affairs for the base, said in the CBS report: "The situation was very quickly deemed to be neither a terrorist event nor an active shooter situation."
