WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A tax preparer has been sentenced to more than 4 years in prison for preparing hundreds of false federal tax returns that cost the government $1.5 million.

Thirty-six-year-old Dawn Chamberlain of Claymont was also ordered to pay restitution at sentencing Thursday in federal court in Wilmington.

Prosecutors say Chamberlain prepared nearly 450 fraudulent tax returns, often claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit for clients who were not eligible.

Prosecutors also say Chamberlain used her clients’ identifying information to file fraudulent New York state resident income tax returns.
