KINGSTREE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican, is praising Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill, a Democrat, as a “true statesman” who will go down in the history books.

Haley made the comments during a tribute to McGill Thursday night in Kingstree.

The Morning News of Florence reports (http://bit.ly/VpTp3G ) hundreds gathered to pay tribute to McGill who began his political career as a town councilman and earlier this year became lieutenant governor.

Haley says there was a constitutional crisis in June when Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell resigned to become president of the College of Charleston and nobody wanted the job because they could not run for re-election.

But she said McGill stepped up and will be remembered for not thinking of himself but thinking of his county, his community and the state.
