UNIONTOWN, Ala. (AP) - Owners of a west Alabama landfill say EPA officials investigating a complaint against the Alabama Department of Environmental management have not contacted them but they would cooperate fully if requested.

The Tuscaloosa News reported this week the complaint alleges the state violated the civil rights of black property owners near the Arrowhead landfill when it reissued its permit in 2011 and later allowed it to expand.

Records show the Perry County landfill accepts more than 15,000 tons of waste per day, accepting garbage from 33 states across the U.S.

Ernest Kaufmann is CEO of landfill owner, Green Group Holdings. He says the landfill has had “zero notices of violation since opening in 2007” and features multiple layers of groundwater protection.

State officials say they are cooperating with the investigation.
