RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (AP) - The search continues on Long Island for a kayaker reported missing in Lake Ronkonkoma (rahn-KAHN’-kuh-muh).

Suffolk County police say witnesses notified 911 that the kayaker was in the water calling for help around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1sJctbI ) the witnesses said the kayaker’s life vest came off and he disappeared.

Police closed the lake to swimmers and boaters on Friday.

There have been several drownings in the lake over the years.

The 243-acre Lake Ronkonkoma is the largest of Long Island’s freshwater lakes.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says parts of the lake are 65 feet deep. But most of it is less than 15 feet deep.
