PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is adding a new section to its website with information about an upcoming referendum that could ban three methods of bear hunting in the state.

A November ballot question will ask voters if they want to prohibit hunting bears while using bait, dogs, or traps. The department, and many hunters and hunting outfitters, oppose the ban. The new website includes videos about black bear management, pictures of field research, and research written by state bear biologists. Department Wildlife Division Director Judy Camuso says the site illustrates “what we have learned from over 40 years of research.”

Supporters of the ban say hunting with bait habituates bears to humans, and the other two methods are cruel.

The website is available via www.mefishwildlife.com.
